Andrew qualified from the University of Leeds in 2007 with MB ChB (Hons) and an intercalated BSc (Hons) in Clinical Sciences. After working as a house officer and senior house officer in London and Sydney he moved back to Newcastle for core medical training and specialist haematology training.  He gained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2011 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2016. He has an interest in laboratory and diagnostic haematology having completed a year out of programme in the Northern England Haemato-Oncology Diagnostic Service and a post-graduate diploma in genomic medicine.

He also has an interest in medical education having completed a post graduate certificate at Newcastle University and he sits on the British Society for Haematology education committee. He is an assessor in the newly created bone marrow trephine NEQAS scheme.  Clinically he takes an interest in myeloproliferative neoplasms (clinic Thursday afternoon) and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (Tuesday afternoon). Andrew has been a consultant haematologist since 2018.
