Susan graduated from Sunderland Polytechnic in 1990 with a BSC (Hons) in Applied Biology and trained as a Biomedical scientist in Cellular Pathology, gaining HCPC registration and membership of the IBMS in 1992. She later obtained an MSc in Biomedical Science from Newcastle University (1997) then Fellowship of the IBMS in 2000.

Specialist experience in Cellular Pathology includes Immunocytochemistry with a particular interest in Muscle and Nerve histopathology.

Susan is an NVQ assessor, an assessor for the UKNEQAS Muscle Technical Scheme and Training Officer for Cellular Pathology.
