Kate is a Consultant Microbiologist in a busy diagnostic laboratory within The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In addition to Laboratory and Infection Control commitments, Kate has an active clinical profile; visiting wards, attending multi-disciplinary meetings, advising on antibiotic therapy and has recently been appointed External Authorising Engineer to the Trust. Kate is employed by Public Health England as the Lead Public Health Microbiologist for the North East region and has held this role since February 2013.

Kate takes an active role in the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and is also the Editor in Chief for Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. Kate has published research and lectured on a wide range of Microbiology topics, her research interests include solid organ transplantation, invitro activity of antibiotics and laboratory based research into biochemical substrates for bacterial isolation. She is a Royal College of Pathologists Council Member and has recently been appointed General Secretary of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy
