John oversees research and development in Microbiology & Virology at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals, where he has worked for over 30 years. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University and a visiting Professor at Northumbria University. He has published over 120 scientific papers and over 20 patents, mainly in the field of diagnostic Clinical Microbiology.

His research interests include the development and evaluation of new clinical diagnostics , with a special interest  in the development of culture media , and the evaluation of novel antimicrobial agents. Much of this work has been performed in collaborative projects with industry and academia.
