My cytology and histology training was via The Medical School, Royal Infirmary Edinburgh from 1981 – 1990. I then spent a year in cytology at the George Washington University Hospital, Washington DC, USA. I Moved to the North East in 1992 and spent eight years at Rake lane Hospital establishing a cytology service. I then took a managerial post in cytology at the University Hospital of North Durham from 2000 – 2012. I joined the RVI in 2012 as an Advanced Practitioner in Cytology and led on the establishment of the HPV testing service. I am currently in the second wave of a national Royal College pilot for non-medical staff in the reporting of gynaecological histopathology. I have supervised numerous MSc projects and I have been an invited speaker both within the UK and abroad.
